What is a BMD Scan (DEXA Scan)?

A BMD scan — Bone Mineral Density scan — also known as a DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard medical test for measuring bone strength and density. It is the only imaging technique clinically validated to diagnose osteoporosis, quantify fracture risk, and monitor the effectiveness of bone-strengthening treatments over time.
During a BMD scan, two low-dose X-ray beams of different energy levels pass through the bone. The machine measures how much of each beam is absorbed by the bone tissue — and uses this data to calculate Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in grams per square centimetre (g/cm2). The result is expressed as a T-score and Z-score, which tells your doctor exactly how your bone density compares to healthy young adults and to people of your age.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing without metal fasteners. Do not take calcium supplements on the scan day.

Lie on the open, padded scanning table. The machine's arm moves above you. Extremely quiet and completely painless. Just lie still.
