Information about Scan Procedures

  • It is a painless test .
  • First the diabetes level is checked after that a cannula is placed in the vein of the patient’s arm.
  • Shortly before the PET-CT test, a type of radioactive chemical is injected, usually into the cannula in the arm vein.
  • It takes at least 1 hour for this chemical to spread throughout the body. During this, the doctor forbids the patient to move and speak. And sitting separately in a solitary room is asked to drink water and urinate.
  • During the examination, the patient can also be given an injection of dye into the vein for CT scan on the advice of the doctor.
  • It may take 15-20 minutes for the machine to complete the test.
  • Some patients require sedation as per their medical condition, if so they will be informed about that and they need to give an informed consent prior to that.
  • After reviewing the initial scan by the doctor of nuclear medicine and if needed, a delayed scan may be required in some cases, which will be taken after 1-2 hours and may take 5-10 minutes in scanning.

Most popular Questions

What is a PET Scan and what is it used for?

A PET Scan, which stands for Positron Emission Tomography, is a type of medical imaging test that can help doctors check for cancers, heart disease, and brain disorders. It works by using a radioactive substance called a tracer that is injected into the body. The tracer is absorbed more by actively growing tissues like cancer cells. The scan then maps the tracer as it emits radiation to create pictures of inside the body on a computer. Doctors can use PET Scan results to help diagnose, stage, and monitor treatment for many conditions.

What are the common reasons for undergoing a PET scan?

This FAQ focuses on the typical medical conditions or purposes for which a healthcare provider might recommend a PET scan, such as cancer detection, brain disorders, or heart conditions.

What is a PET scan and how does it differ from other imaging tests like CT or MRI?

This question aims to provide an overview of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans, including how they work and their differences from other imaging modalities such as CT (Computed Tomography) or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

What preparations are required before a PET Scan in Varanasi?

For optimal scan results, there are some preparations patients need to follow. You should avoid vigorous exercise or strenuous activity for at least 4 hours before. Eating is also restricted depending on the body area being scanned – it’s common to fast for 4-6 hours before. You may be asked not to smoke or drink caffeinated or alcoholic beverages on the day. Following all instructions carefully ensures clear images without any interference. Let the technician know about any medical conditions or implants too.

When will I get the PET Scan report and what does it show?

Scan images are reconstructed into 3D color images by radiologists. The report is usually available within 2-4 days. It provides information like abnormal radioactive tracer uptake in some areas indicating active tumors or lesions. It doesn’t provide a definite cancer diagnosis but can detect its spread or recurrence. Doctors analyze PET along with other test reports for a conclusive diagnosis and treatment planning. Always discuss the findings and next steps with your doctor.

How is a PET Scan procedure done?

For any PET Scan in Varanasi, on this day you’ll first be given an injection of radioactive tracer substance containing low dose radiation. This is usually given via a vein (IV) in the arm. You’ll then need to wait about an hour for the tracer to circulate and accumulate in tissues before the actual scan.

During the scan, you lie still on a table that slides into the circular donut shaped PET scanner. The scan itself only takes around 30 minutes as images are captured. It’s non-invasive but you may feel slightly claustrophobic inside the machine. Try to keep still as movement can blur results.

What should I expect during a PET scan?

This question addresses the procedure itself, including whether the patient will need to lie still, receive an injection of a radioactive tracer, and how long the scan will take.

Is a PET scan safe? Are there any risks involved?

Safety concerns regarding radiation exposure and potential allergic reactions to the radioactive tracer used in PET scans are addressed in response to this question.

How much does a basic PET Scan cost in Varanasi?

From asking around and checking online the average price of a basic whole body PET Scan cost in Varanasi seems to be around Rs. 24000. Some factors that can affect the exact cost include the hospital or center, whether the scan is done for diagnostic or screening purposes, if oral or IV contrast is used, etc. Insurance coverage may play a role too. But this PET Scan price in Varanasi ranges seem standard at Karauli Diagnostics. It’s an investment but hopefully worth it for potentially important medical information.
