Frequently Asked Questions
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear imaging technique that provides 3D images of tissues & organs functioning inside the human body and helps Doctors to diagnose various types of Cancer.
PET scan helps diagnose abnormal cellular activity in internal organs. It recognizes symptoms of certain malignant diseases that other imaging techniques may not. It is advised by your doctor either to suspect cancer or that cancer may have spread. It is also used to determine the damage following a heart attack or stroke and to monitor your response to neurological, cardiovascular or cancer treatments.
During scan, a radioactive form of glucose (FDG), also called a radiotracer, is injected into the vein of your arm. The radiotracer gets absorbed by the body and then a PET scan and CT scan is performed to get a complete picture of what is going on.
It usually takes around 30-60 minutes for the radiotracer to get absorbed by body parts. After that, the scan can take somewhere around 15-20 minutes. You will be asked to remain still for the length of the exam.
The patient can leave the centre immediately after PET scan. It is important to drink loads of water throughout the day to flush out the radioactive chemical from the body.
A PET Scan helps in differentiating benign and malignant tumours, and allows accurate staging. Both CT and MRI allow us to view internal body structures.
PET scan is a painless imaging test and uses a radiotracer. Ladies should inform, if they are pregnant or breastfeeding.
PET-CT scan is a detailed investigation and therefore our team of doctors will review and report the study within 24-48 working hours.
