What is An X-Ray?

An X-ray is a rapid, non-invasive diagnostic test that makes it easier for doctors to find out more about the organs and bones inside the body.

How is an image taken in an X-ray centre?

X-rays are images that use to take pictures of structures inside the body on films called radiographs. A machine releases X-ray beams aimed at the body part that needs to be scanned. These X-rays pass through your body and land on a plate that holds the film. A black, white and grey image is produced in the film. The X -Rays are absorbed in different concentrations, depending on the density of the material they pass through. Material like bone and metal is dense, so they show up as white on the images, while air is light and shows up as black spaces on the film. Muscle and soft tissue can appear as shades of grey. An X-Ray is a painless procedure, but children may find it hard to stay still. The radiology technician may position you at different angles to better view the area that needs to be examined. You may be asked to hold your breath so the image doesn’t blur.

Physicians may ask you to get an X-ray to diagnose

  • Fractured bones
  • Dislocated joints
  • Arthritis or joint inflammation
  • Abdominal pain due to gall stones or kidney stones
  • Cancer (for example breast cancer through a mammograph)
  • Tooth decay (through an OPG Xray)
  • Pneumonia through a chest Xray
  • Tuberculosis (patchy lesion or tubercles seen on chest Xrays)
  • Foreign objects that may have been swallowed or inserted into body cavities.

What are the different types of X-Rays done?

Plain X-Ray

A plain X-ray is done in most diagnostic centres and uses an X-ray machine with a plate containing the film. Some centres offer portable or digital X-ray services, which allow X-ray scans to be taken during a home visit

Contrast X-ray

Some scans may require a contrast examination. This means that a radiocontrast dye  will be injected into a vein in your arm. Sometimes it may be given orally or as an enema. Once the dye enters the bloodstream or the organs, it highlights specific tissues making them easier to visualise, as it enhances the quality of the images. The dye is usually removed from your body in the urine. Please inform the radiologist if you have any known allergies to dyes or a kidney disease that could affect the removal of the dye.

Mammography

A mammography or a mammogram uses low-dose x-rays aimed at the breast tissue to detect early signs of cancer and is done as a screening test for women as they get older. The breast is placed between a support plate and another plate before a series of X-ray images are taken to look for small signs of cancer tissue. Mammography at Varanasi is done at Karauli Diagnostics. The mammography test cost at our centre is competitive and cost-effective. • Chest X-Ray
  • Abdominal X-Ray
  • Mammography
  • Dental X-Ray
  • Fluoroscopy
  • KUB X-Ray
  • Joint X-Ray
  • Skull X-Ray etc.
What Is the Purpose Of The X-Ray?

X-Ray is recommended for various purposes such as:

  • Diagnose and monitor various health conditions
  • Examine the area of pain or discomfort
  • Detect fractures, bone abnormalities, lung disease, bone cancer, digestive system-related issues, infections, joint-related issues, dental issues, and other health issues.
  • Monitor the progression of the disease
  • Check the effectiveness of ongoing treatment
What Are the Advantages of an X-Ray?

X-Ray is considered a valuable tool for diagnosing various medical issues. There are various advantages of an X-Ray such as:

  • Non-Invasiveness
  • Quick and Convenient
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Less exposure to radiation
What Are the Disadvantages of an X-Ray?
  • Use of Ionizing radiation
  • Limited detail compared to advanced imaging techniques such as CT or MRI scans.
  • Lack of colour and texture
  • Not safe to use during pregnancy
Why is X-Ray Used for Diagnosis?

X-rays are used for diagnosis because of their ability to penetrate the body and image the body's internal structures. X-rays can easily show abnormalities, fractures, dislocations, tumors, digestion issues, lung diseases, and infections. They provide valuable information to doctors about the condition of the patients and aid them in effective diagnosis of the problem and appropriate treatment planning for patients.

What is a Digital X-Ray Test?

A digital X-ray test(radiography) is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses electromagnetic radiation to image the internal structures of the body. It involves revealing the body part to a controlled dose of X-ray radiation, which penetrates the body and interacts differently with different tissues, and forms an image on a digital detector. This digital technology has largely replaced conventional film-based X-rays, because of numerous advantages such as reduced radiation exposure, faster image acquisition, and enhanced image quality.
