Preparation for Test Day

  • It is essential to have one person with the patient on the day of the test.
  • Bring all the documents related to the disease and its treatment along with the referral letter from your doctor, i.e.: X-ray, MRI, CT scan film and report / operation discharge report / biopsy report / previous PET-CT report and CD with you and recent (1 week) blood tests for Serum Creatinine and Serum Urea.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the PET-CT scan on the day of the test. Only plain water (hot/cold) can be drunk.
  • (No fruit Juice, Lemon water, Karha, Prasad, dahi-chini, tea, coffee, gur, chocolate, toffee is allowed with in 6hrs before the test otherwise you test may be cancelled)
  • Do not consume excess sugar/starch/alcohol one night before test. For best results, please abstain from smoking for atleast 3 days prior to your PET Scan test.
  • It is forbidden to do any kind of exercise / running / strenuous work before 24 hours, this may affect the results of the test (report).
  • On the day of the test, come wearing light comfortable clothes, if possible, do not wear jewellery because all these will have to be removed before the test.
  • Notify us if you have had or have had an allergic reaction (or to intravenous iodinated dye / oral dye) before the injection of any radioactive drug / before the scan begins.
  • If you feel afraid of enclosed spaces, then tell the doctor about it. (At the time of appointment)
  • If you have diabetes and on medicines to control diabetes, please inform us about your diabetic prescription for us to plan the needful for your test. Your fasting diabetes level under control to 160-170 mg/dl.
  • If you are or may be pregnant, be sure to tell our staff/doctor before injecting radioactive medicine for PET-CT test.
  • If you are breast-feeding a baby, in this test, a small amount of the radioactive chemical injected into the patient can be detected in the mother’s milk for some time after the test. If the mother has had a PET-CT, the baby should not be breastfed for 1 day after the scan. Patients should not bring young children and pregnant women with them.
  • Total stay time required in the department for PET-CT scan will be approx. 3-4 hours. Kindly bring your food snacks etc. that can be given to patient after the scan done.

Information about Scan Procedures

  • It is a painless test .
  • First the diabetes level is checked after that a cannula is placed in the vein of the patient’s arm.
  • Shortly before the PET-CT test, a type of radioactive chemical is injected, usually into the cannula in the arm vein.
  • It takes at least 1 hour for this chemical to spread throughout the body. During this, the doctor forbids the patient to move and speak. And sitting separately in a solitary room is asked to drink water and urinate.
  • During the examination, the patient can also be given an injection of dye into the vein for CT scan on the advice of the doctor.
  • It may take 15-20 minutes for the machine to complete the test.
  • Some patients require sedation as per their medical condition, if so they will be informed about that and they need to give an informed consent prior to that.
  • After reviewing the initial scan by the doctor of nuclear medicine and if needed, a delayed scan may be required in some cases, which will be taken after 1-2 hours and may take 5-10 minutes in scanning.
  • After the test, patients can take their food and all their medicines.
