About the Test

What is a 2D Echo (Echocardiography)?

A 2D Echocardiogram is a real-time ultrasound scan of the heart — the most powerful, non-invasive tool for evaluating heart structure and function. It shows your heart beating live on screen, revealing valve movements, wall motion, chamber sizes, and blood flow in extraordinary detail.

Unlike a standard ECG (which only records electrical activity), a 2D Echo shows the actual physical structure and function of the heart — the four chambers, four valves, the surrounding pericardium, and the major vessels entering and leaving the heart. It uses high-frequency ultrasound waves — no radiation, no injections, no discomfort.

The "2D" (two-dimensional) image is produced when the transducer (probe) placed on the chest converts returning sound echoes into real-time cross-sectional images of the heart. These moving images show each heartbeat, each valve opening and closing, and the walls of the heart contracting and relaxing — all in real time.

Most modern 2D Echo tests at Karauli Diagnostics also incorporate Colour Doppler and M-Mode echocardiography — adding colour-coded blood flow mapping and precise millimetre measurements of heart structures.

How is a 2D Echo Performed?

1

Preparation: You lie comfortably on an examination table. Adhesive ECG electrodes are applied to the chest to simultaneously monitor the heart rhythm during the scan.

2

Gel Application: A clear, water-based ultrasound gel is applied to the chest for optimal image quality.

3

Scanning: Our trained sonographer gently moves the transducer (probe) across different positions on your chest to view the heart from multiple angles.

4

Breathing: You may be asked to breathe slowly, hold your breath briefly, or lie on your left side to bring the heart closer to the chest wall.

5

Completion: The entire painless procedure takes 20–40 minutes. Our reporting physician reviews all images and generates a comprehensive report.

Types Available

Types of Echocardiography

A 2D Echo is a comprehensive cardiac imaging examination that combines several echocardiographic modalities performed simultaneously.

2D (Two-Dimensional) Echocardiography

Produces real-time cross-sectional "slice" images of the heart, showing all four chambers, all four valves, the pericardium, and major vessels in motion.

Standard · Always Included

Colour Doppler Echocardiography

Adds colour-coded blood flow mapping to the 2D image. Instantly identifies valve leaks, abnormal flow patterns, and holes between chambers.

Always Included

M-Mode (Motion Mode)

A single ultra-thin "ice pick" beam that records the motion of specific heart structures over time, providing precise millimetre measurements.

Always Included

Pulsed Wave (PW) Doppler

Measures the velocity of blood flow at a specific location — essential for evaluating individual valve function and diastolic heart function.

Always Included

Continuous Wave (CW) Doppler

Measures high-velocity blood flow across stenotic valves and septal defects to calculate pressure gradients.

Always Included

Ejection Fraction (EF) Calculation

The most important single measurement — the percentage of blood pumped out of the left ventricle with each heartbeat. Normal EF is 55–70%.

What We Measure

Key Parameters Evaluated in a 2D Echo

A comprehensive 2D Echo report evaluates multiple parameters, giving your cardiologist a complete quantitative and qualitative assessment of your heart's health.

Ejection Fraction (LVEF)

Percentage of blood pumped with each beat. Determines systolic heart failure severity.

Chamber Dimensions

Precise measurements of all four chambers assessed for enlargement or shrinkage.

Wall Thickness

Assesses hypertrophy (thickening) seen in hypertension and cardiomyopathy.

Valve Assessments

Mitral, Aortic, Tricuspid, and Pulmonary valves checked for regurgitation (leak) or stenosis.

Diastolic Function

Comprehensive assessment grading heart relaxation from Grade I (mild) to Grade III (severe).

Pericardial Effusion

Detection and quantification of fluid around the heart, with assessment for cardiac tamponade.

Wall Motion Analysis

Regional wall motion assessment of all 17 myocardial segments to detect areas of ischaemia.

Aortic Root & IVC

Aortic root diameter (aneurysm screening) and IVC dimensions (right atrial pressure estimation).

Diagnostic Applications

Heart Conditions Diagnosed

2D Echo is the most versatile cardiac imaging tool — capable of diagnosing a remarkably wide range of heart conditions accurately and non-invasively.

Heart Failure

  • Systolic heart failure (reduced EF)
  • Diastolic heart failure (preserved EF)
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy
  • Response to heart failure treatment

Heart Valve Diseases

  • Mitral stenosis or regurgitation
  • Aortic stenosis or regurgitation
  • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP)
  • Rheumatic heart disease

Coronary Artery Disease

  • Regional wall motion abnormalities
  • Old myocardial infarction scarring
  • LV aneurysm post-heart attack
  • Left ventricular thrombus

Pulmonary Hypertension

  • Elevated pulmonary artery systolic pressure
  • Right heart enlargement and failure
  • Tricuspid regurgitation from PH

Congenital Heart Disease

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD)
  • Ventricular septal defect (VSD)
  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO)
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)

Pericardial Disease

  • Pericardial effusion (fluid around heart)
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • Constrictive pericarditis
