Clinical Role of Health Screening
Many conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol and early kidney disease, may cause few or no symptoms initially. Screening can be helpful when selected according to age, risk factors, symptoms and medical history. Your doctor can advise which tests are appropriate for you.
What is included in a full body checkup?
Understanding components beyond marketing titles.
Packages vary. Common components include a complete blood count (CBC), blood glucose and/or HbA1c, lipid profile, liver function tests (LFT), kidney function tests (KFT) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and sometimes a routine urine examination. Check the package’s actual test list rather than relying on its name.
| Test | What it can show | Fasting / preparation |
|---|---|---|
|
CBC (complete blood count; sometimes with ESR) Haematology |
Measures haemoglobin, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It may help identify anaemia and provide clues to infection or inflammation; it cannot diagnose the cause by itself. | No |
|
Blood glucose: fasting / post-meal; HbA1c Glycaemic Assessment |
Glucose measures blood sugar at the time of collection. HbA1c estimates average glucose over roughly the previous 2–3 months. | Fasting glucose: usually at least 8 hours; HbA1c: no |
|
Lipid profile Cardiovascular Risk |
Measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides to help assess cardiovascular risk. | Often not; follow your clinician/lab instructions |
|
Liver function tests (LFT) Hepatic Panel |
May include ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, albumin and other proteins. Abnormal results need interpretation with history and other findings. | Usually no; test panel/lab instructions may vary |
|
Kidney function tests (KFT) with eGFR Renal Panel |
Often includes creatinine and urea; some panels include electrolytes and uric acid. eGFR estimates kidney filtration using creatinine and relevant patient factors. | Usually no; follow lab instructions |
|
Thyroid tests Endocrine Panel |
TSH is commonly used to assess thyroid function; free T4 and sometimes T3 may be added when indicated. TSH alone does not explain every thyroid condition. | Usually no |
|
Routine urine examination Urinalysis |
May assess protein, glucose, blood cells and other findings. Results depend on collection quality and clinical context. | A clean-catch sample is important; first-morning urine may be preferred for some assessments |

What is a lipid profile test?
Cardiovascular lipid assessment and cholesterol numbers explained.
A lipid profile is a blood test measuring total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. These results help a clinician estimate cardiovascular risk and monitor treatment. High cholesterol commonly causes no symptoms, so testing decisions should be based on age, personal risk and clinical advice.
How is a lipid profile test done?
Sample CollectionA trained phlebotomist collects a small blood sample, usually from a vein in the arm. The collection itself generally takes only a few minutes. Non-fasting lipid testing is appropriate for many people, but a clinician may request fasting testing in particular circumstances. Follow the instructions provided when booking.
How should I understand the numbers?
Clinical InterpretationThere is no single cholesterol target suitable for everyone. The desired LDL and non-HDL levels depend on overall cardiovascular risk, including previous heart or vascular disease, diabetes, blood pressure, smoking, age and family history. Triglyceride results also need context. Do not start, stop or change medicines based only on an online target or one laboratory result; review the report with your doctor.
What do the other tests show?
Detailed breakdown of CBC, blood sugar, liver, kidney, and thyroid markers.
CBC: blood count
HaematologyCBC measures haemoglobin and blood-cell counts. It can help detect anaemia and may provide clues to infection, inflammation, bleeding or blood disorders. An abnormal result does not, on its own, establish a diagnosis. ESR, when included, is a non-specific marker of inflammation.
Blood glucose and HbA1c
Diabetes & GlycaemiaFasting blood glucose is measured after the fasting period specified by the laboratory, commonly at least 8 hours. HbA1c reflects average glucose over approximately 2–3 months and does not usually require fasting. A result in the diabetes range may need confirmation unless the clinical situation meets diagnostic criteria. Your clinician should interpret results in context, as some conditions can affect HbA1c accuracy.
LFT: liver-related blood tests
Hepatic FunctionLFT panels commonly measure liver-associated enzymes, bilirubin and proteins. Abnormal values can occur for many reasons, including fatty liver, alcohol, medicines, viral illness and conditions affecting other organs. These tests do not measure liver function perfectly, and an abnormal result is a reason for clinical assessment—not a diagnosis by itself.
KFT with eGFR: kidney assessment
Renal Health & FiltrationKidney panels commonly include creatinine and urea; other components vary by package. eGFR is an estimate of filtration, usually calculated from creatinine and patient factors. A single low eGFR does not automatically mean chronic kidney disease. Kidney disease is assessed using the persistence of abnormalities over time and other evidence, such as urine albumin, as appropriate. Ask whether eGFR and urine albumin testing are included if your clinician has requested them.
Thyroid tests
Endocrine & TSHTSH is commonly used as an initial thyroid test. Depending on the result and clinical situation, free T4 and sometimes T3 may be needed. High or low TSH can suggest a thyroid problem but must be interpreted with symptoms, medicines and other results. Biotin (vitamin B7), found in some hair, skin and nail supplements, can interfere with certain laboratory assays. Tell your clinician and laboratory about supplements; do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.
How should I prepare for a full body checkup?
Essential preparation guidelines to ensure sample accuracy and safety.
General Fasting Rule
Preparation depends on the tests ordered. Do not fast unless the package or clinician specifically requires it.
Fasting Duration & Water
If fasting glucose or another fasting test is included, follow the laboratory’s stated fasting duration—often at least 8 hours. Plain water is generally allowed.
Avoid Drinks & Food During Fast
During a required fast, avoid tea, coffee, milk, juice and other drinks or foods unless the laboratory gives different instructions.
Prescription Medicines Management
Do not stop regular medicines on your own. If you take insulin or diabetes medicines, ask your treating clinician in advance how to manage them on the morning of a fasting test.
Alcohol & Exercise
Ask the centre whether you should avoid alcohol or strenuous exercise before collection, as these may affect some results.
Supplements & Medical History
Tell the clinician/laboratory about supplements (especially biotin), medicines, pregnancy, recent illness and any relevant medical conditions.
Previous Reports & Comparison
Keep previous reports available so results can be compared over time.
Urine Sample Collection
For urine testing, follow the collection instructions and use the supplied container when provided.

Who may benefit from screening, and how often?
Tailoring diagnostic screening to your clinical risk profile.
There is no universal schedule or single package suitable for everyone. Screening should be tailored to age, symptoms, family history, risk factors, pregnancy status, existing conditions and medicines. Adults with diabetes risk factors, high blood pressure, excess weight, smoking history, a strong family history of premature cardiovascular disease, or long-term medicines affecting the liver or kidneys should discuss appropriate testing with a clinician. Population-screening programmes and professional recommendations may guide decisions, but they do not mean every person needs every test at the same interval.
Screening vs. Symptom Evaluation
A screening package is not a substitute for evaluating symptoms. If you have new or concerning symptoms, seek medical advice rather than relying on a routine package.
How should I read my report?
Understanding laboratory reference ranges and result patterns.
Read the report with a qualified clinician. Reference ranges differ by laboratory and may vary with age, sex, pregnancy and other factors. A result flagged high or low is not automatically a diagnosis; a result within range does not rule out every condition.
Pattern of Results
Consider the pattern of results, not just one number.
Physiological Influences
Recent illness, exercise, fasting status, hydration and medicines may affect some measurements.
Follow-up Investigations
Your clinician may recommend repeat testing or additional investigations based on your history and examination.
Medication Management
Do not begin, stop or change medication solely because of a screening report.
Emergency Red Flag Warning
Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness on one side, or sudden confusion. Do not wait for a routine test report.
